Steering wheel vibration should never be ignored. Certain causes, such as worn CV joints or failing brakes, can compromise your safety on the road. Others, like an unbalanced tyre, are more of an annoyance, but still worth sorting out.

When Does the Vibration Happen?

Is It Your Tyres?

Tyres are the most common cause of a steering wheel shake. There are a few reasons why.

  • Wheel balance out. This is the most common cause, especially after hitting a pothole. An unbalanced wheel will vibrate more as your speed climbs. It’s often felt first at highway speeds, then it gets noticeable even around town as the imbalance worsens.
  • Uneven or cupped tyre wear. Tyres wear unevenly for a range of reasons, including poor alignment or worn suspension components. This uneven tyre wear creates a wobble that gets worse at higher speeds. Cupping, where the tread wears in scalloped patches, is a common culprit and is easy to spot with a visual check.
  • The tyre is out of round or damaged internally. A bulge or internal separation in a tyre can cause vibration even when the tyre looks fine on the outside. This kind of damage often follows a hard hit on a pothole or kerb, and it isn’t always obvious without a proper inspection.

  • Warped or worn brake rotors. Heat and wear can cause a rotor to lose its flat surface. This creates a pulsing feel through the brake pedal and steering wheel. It’s especially common after heavy braking on long descents or in cars that tow regularly.
  • Uneven pad wear or a stuck calliper. Brake pads and rotors wear together. If one side wears faster, you’ll feel vibration and pulling to one side. A stuck calliper can also cause a dragging feel, along with a faint burning smell after driving.

Is It Your CV Joints?

CV joints let your front wheels turn while still transferring power from the engine. When they wear out, you’ll notice it.

  • Worn or damaged CV joints and boots. A torn CV joint boot lets grit and moisture in. This speeds up wear and eventually causes play or looseness in the joint. Once a boot is torn, the joint underneath wears out much faster than normal, so it’s worth catching early.
  • Clicking or popping on tight turns. This is often paired with vibration, especially at low speed, like in a car park or roundabout. The noise tends to get louder the tighter the turn.

Low or contaminated power steering fluid can cause similar symptoms. A leak is usually the reason behind low fluid, so it’s worth checking under the car for any signs.

This cause is less common than tyre, brake, or CV joint issues, but it’s worth ruling out if the others don’t quite match what you’re feeling.

Other Possible Causes

A shaking steering wheel isn’t always tyres, brakes, or CV joints. A few other culprits are worth ruling out.

  • Worn wheel bearings. This causes a constant vibration or humming that gets worse at higher speeds. Worn wheel bearings don’t improve when you brake or turn, and the noise often changes pitch with speed.
  • Wheel alignment issues. Misalignment causes uneven tyre wear over time, along with a pull to one side and steering wheel vibration. It’s also one of the easier issues to fix once diagnosed.
  • Loose wheel nuts. Check this first. It’s quick, free, and every so often, it really is the cause. Loose nuts can also cause a knocking noise over bumps.
  • Bent rim. A rim bent from a pothole or kerb strike throws off weight distribution and causes vibration, similar to an unbalanced tyre.
  • Worn ball joints. These connect your suspension components to the steering system. Play in a ball joint can add to vibration and looseness in the steering feel.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving?

This depends on the cause.

Tyre balance issues are usually safe to drive with short term, though they’re worth fixing soon since they cause premature wear on other components, including suspension parts and wheel bearings.

Brake and CV joint issues are a different story. Both affect your ability to stop and steer safely. These should be checked promptly, ideally before your next long drive.

If in doubt, get it looked at. A quick road test can usually settle the question, and it’s far cheaper in the long run than letting a small issue turn into a bigger one.
